"Project ACES- Active Children Excel in School", the physical activity challenge held each fall in Carroll County elementary schools, received the 2005 Youth Physical Activity Excellence Award from the State Advisory Council on Physical Fitness. The Award was presented to the Children's Heart Health Action Team of Carroll County by Governor Ehrlich at the State House in Annapolis on December 5, 2005. The Award was accepted by Linda Kephart, Supervisor of Health and Elementary Physical Education; Holly Walter, Health teacher at Westminster Elementary School; and Jamie Hitchner, Physical Education teacher at Taneytown Elementary School.
The Heart Health Action Team plans the annual challenge to encourage students to be more physically active to improve health, fitness and performance in school. Team members include: Dawn Eldridge (Project Coordinator) and Kim Spangler of the Carroll County Health Department, Linda Kephart and Bruce Cowan of Carroll County Public Schools, Melissa Murdock of Carroll Hospital Center, Bill Schaefer of the Department of Recreation and Parks, Ron Schroers of Westminster City Recreation and Parks, Brendon Michaels of Carroll Community College and Becky Herman of the Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County.
The Project ACES Challenge has grown steadily for 7 years, thanks to the dedication and resources of a community coalition of members. Health and Physical Education teachers coordinate the program in the schools with a variety of special activities. This year, a record 7128 students in 24 schools completed the Project ACES Challenge, and 94% of them met the goal of 30 minutes or more of physical activity each day for two weeks. Twenty schools earned trophies for exceptional participation and over 400 students are receiving prizes from Project ACES. School PTAs and PTOs provided other exciting prizes for students.
