Smokers have many tools available to help them quit smoking for good. Local programs are available through funding support provided by the Carroll County Health Department’s Cigarette Restitution Fund program. Many classes are provided in partnership with Carroll Hospital Center. Registration is easy, and a variety of locations and schedules are available.
Community-Based Programs - Programs are offered for tobacco use prevention, cessation and education. These FREE classes provide self-help materials to aid in quitting tobacco use. Participants in classes receive vouchers for nicotine patches, gum, and lozenges. Discount vouchers for Chantix - a prescription medicine to help adults quit smoking without nicotine - are also available – based on funding availability.
The Next Step Maintenance Program
This is a group to assist in staying quit and tobacco free. It meets once a month in the evening at Carroll Hospital Center. No registration required. Call 410-876-4429 or 410-876-4443 for further information.
Stop Using Tobacco for Life!
This is a 5-week program which focuses on the individual's need to develop skills to unlearn the habitual and unconscious part of the smoking habit. The program is run by trained cessation counselors. Registration is required. This program is open to those who smoke cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, as well as those who use smokeless (spit) tobacco.
Sessions cover:
- Behavior Modification Techniques
- Meet others trying to quit – share ideas
- Stress Management Techniques
- Positive Addiction vs. Negative Addiction
- Vouchers – reduces cost of nicotine patch, gum, lozenges & Chantix
- Carbon monoxide checks.
Location: Carroll Hospital Center. These 5-week classes are held fall, winter and spring. Call HEALTH ACCESS at 410-871-7000 to register for the above classes.
Jump Start to Quitting
This “quick quit” program will help you achieve a tobacco-free life. This two-hour clinic will get you started, or refresh your quitting plan. Sessions are held at Carroll County Health Department and various locations throughout the county. You must register to attend. Call 410-876-4429 for current information and class locations.

The American Lung Association has a quit-tobacco HelpLine which is staffed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists and tobacco cessation specialists. The HelpLine is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. at 1-800-548-8252.
