Carroll County Clothesline Project Statistics

In 2003, in Carroll County, Maryland there were:
~300-900 people were battered or assaulted:
Uniform Crime Statistics report 525 cases of Domestic Violence in 2002
According to the Youth Strategies Grand Data Needs Assessment and Strategic Plan, Family and Childrens reported 606 adult DV victims served
311 victims of DV interviewed in the last nine months of '03 by the Carroll County Sheriff's Department
The Carroll County Domestic Violence Program served 982 new clients in '03
The Department of Human Resource Snapshot of '03 reported 327 DV victims served
Carroll County Family Law reported 567 uncontested hearings in 2004
~ 30-300 people were raped or sexually assaulted:
The Rape Crisis Intervention Service reported that 302 new clients sought services -'03
Department of Human Resources Snapshot reported 196 rape victims served in '03
Maryland State Police reported 36 rapes in 2000
Uniform Crime Statistics reported 31 rapes in 2003
~50-200 people were identified as survivors of child sexual assault:
There were 451 cases investigated by CASA in 2004 ( not defined as to what type of abuse)
Child Protective Services Intake Statistics reported 148 reports in 2003
Family and Children's reported 54 new Child Victims served in 2003
National and Maryland State Statistics:
In the USA a woman is battered every 15 seconds
One person dies every 5 days in Maryland as a result of Domestic Violence
45-70% of battered women report that batterers also committed some form of child abuse
Animal abuse was found in 88% of families where physical child abuse occurred
Women who are beaten are twice as likely as other women to abuse a child
Nearly 30% of all female homicide victims were killed by their partner
1 out of every 6 women and 1 out of every 33 men in the United States have experienced an attempted or completed rape
More than half of all rapes of women occur before age 18; 22% before age 12
1/4 of all women experience a completed or attempted rape during their college years
Fewer than half the rapes or sexual assaults are reported to police
62% of rape and sexual assault victims knew the perpetrators
In 88% of abusive homes, animal abuse was also found
25% of women said they were raped and or physically assaulted by a partner
Gay and Lesbian teens are 2-3 times more likely to attempt suicide and account for 30% of all completed suicides
45% of gay males and 20 % of lesbians experienced physical or verbal assaults while in high school
The US Department of Justice states that "Homosexuals are probably the most frequent victims (of hate crimes) in the United States
During the 6 months following an episode of domestic violence, 32% of battered women are victimized again
Only 1 out of 7 cases of domestic violence are reported to police
22% of bisexual and lesbian respondents reported a past history of sexual abuse
More than 500,000 Americans aged 60 and over were victims of domestic abuse in 1996.
The number of victims served by counselors is often more than those reported to law enforcement agencies. It is thought that less than half the assault victims seek help.
