About
A component of the L.E.A.N. Carroll – Healthy Eating project, It’s Crunch Time! adds snap, crisp, and crunch to schools and homes all over Carroll County Developed with funding from Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States to combat gloomy community nutrition data, It’s Crunch Time! engages children in their own nutrition, rewards their healthy food choices, and gives families a platform from which to make critical nutrition changes.
It’s Crunch Time! is launched in school and at home simultaneously, which strengthens the message to add crunchy fruits and vegetables to meals. “Crunch Your Lunch” sticker sessions at schools provide an instant reward for kids who are “caught” crunching their lunch. We piloted this unique program in April 2011 at two Carroll County Public Schools elementary schools. Over 300 children volunteered to participate, and the results were incredible! Most kids upped their daily fruit and vegetable servings by at least one serving a day, and reduced their intake of sugary drinks and “junk” food.
The Partnership is working with additional Carroll County child serving facilities such as ABC Care, Boys and Girls Club of Westminster, Carroll Community College Kids@Carroll summer camp, and elementary schools to add crunch to kids’ lunches.
